Their ride back was subdued, the argument and the stress of the day still hovering between them. Leah couldn’t get the picture of Annika’s face out of her mind. Annika wanted to die. Tried to die because of what this man did to her.

“I think you really helped her,” Leah finally said as they reached the valley at the edge of town.

“My heart’s just breaking for her,” Amanda said. “I hope she gets some peace.”

“It makes me feel like a schmuck for complaining about anything in my life.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” Amanda sighed. “If my biggest problem is that my wonderful fiancé and his generous mother want to give me a beautiful wedding, I need to shut my mouth.”

Leah wasn’t intending to hint, but it was a fair point.

“So, they think he drugged her? Oh, my God, can this get any worse?”

Leah shook her head. “I don’t see how it could.”

“Are they making any progress on finding this guy?” Amanda asked.

Once again, she felt the need to defend Kemp. “They’re working really hard. They are. It was such a random crime and Annika can’t provide any description, so they’re stuck. But it’s not like they aren’t trying.”

“Of course they’re trying,” Amanda said. “I never said they weren’t. I asked if they are getting anywhere. Do they have any leads, or ideas, or even guesses?”

“I don’t think so,” Leah said, trying to calm her defensive beast. “At the last meeting, everything blew up in Kemp’s face. I think Barb would have fired him if she could have. The BCA is coming in to help, which pisses off Kemp. But he also knows they need help.”

“You know, I thought Gordy would be getting the heat instead of Kemp. Isn’t Gordy head of investigations?” Amanda turned into their parking lot and pulled into a space designated for county cars.

Leah considered for a moment. “They put Kemp in charge of this one.”

Amanda nodded. “Makes sense, I guess. I hear Gordy’s not doing well lately. What’s wrong with him, again?”

“M.S. Or maybe lupus. I can’t remember for sure. It’s whatever gives you chronic pain, makes it so you can’t breathe and gives you eczema.”

“I’d feel worse for him if he weren’t such a creep,” Amanda said. They both climbed out the car and used the back employee entrance into their building.

Back at her desk, Leah checked her cell and found a voicemail message from earlier in the day. It was from Luke.

“Hey, sis, I gotta talk to you. I did somethin’ and I needa tell ya . . . aw, shit. I’m sorry. I hope you won’t hate me.” The message cut off. Luke’s words were slurred, his voice thick with weed and remorse. She was too exhausted and sad to even consider what Luke might have done this time.

The melancholy mood stuck all day, and by the time 4:30 arrived Leah shut down her computer and moped to her car. When she got home she dropped her keys by her back door, pulled on some running clothes and went out for a long, hilly run to try to burn off the day.
